Second rate citizen
First day in Egypt - 45 degree heat. The landscape is like a mirage through the heat waves. A minumum of 4 litres water consumption per day is required to prevent dehydration and illness, and even still many suffer the effects of the heat. What is possibly the worst part is their culture expects you to cover from head to tow if you're a woman - most tourists have resorted to possibly offending their culture to avoid toppling over from overheating, including me.

It is the first place that I have felt discriminated against for being a white Australian woman. Even in the airport I felt unwelcomed and discriminated against, being asked for my passport at random intervals where men and EU citizens simply walked through. But it is a humbling experience to be somewhat in the minority - makes you proud of how far the western world has come in terms of gender equality. And luckily I will be diving for the majority of the time I am in Sharm El Shiekh - the ocean could never make you feel like a second class citizen.

Interestingly enough, I have been here 24 hours now and I am yet to see an Egyptain woman. The streets, shop fronts and Las Vegas like Casino's are lined with men, yet it seems that women are never seen, never heard and never integrated into every day life outside the home. I'm beginning to think that Egyptain women are a myth - it would explain the constant gawking that I'm recieving from most of the Egyptain men...

Despite all, this is the most mesmerising place - there is an intangeable something that makes this part of the world magical and mysterious. The horizon is surreal - mountains of sand and rock stand vividly in your view, both nearby and afar, like the backset of an Indiana Jones movie.

I can't wait to see how it makes me feel to see the pyramids sit in that horizon...

Once upon a time in an ancient empire...
If you're interested in travelling through Europe by rail go to: www.eurailgroup.com

Ancient Rome is just as alive as the new Roman times. Grand ruins of an ancient empire are scattered everywhere in the city, standing tall amongst new shopping centres and apartment blocks. No monument has been overly preserved or restored, giving you a licence to loose yourself in a world of imagination, recreating what once was - bearing the marks of war, weather and the times, you can feel the history and sense the people that once roamed this great empire.

In Rome even the most simple of buildings are decorated with concrete urns, colums, scrolls and Roman statues. Vinyards creep up the walls and spill over balconys on nearly every house and apartment. Many buildings are numbered with Roman numerals. The suburbs are overcrowded but people seem comfortable and happy.

Road rules seem to have little meaning, with Vespers scooting in and out of any space they can fit through.

And the most incredible thing is that I saw and felt all of this in the first hour that I was here.

Like being home...
Much anticipated, long awaited and far overdue…

After having lived in a country colonized by the British, had pride in a flag which carries the union jack, studied and practiced in a legal system based on British laws, and watched countless repeats of Bargain Hunt and Antiques Roadshow with my Mum on the UK Channel, I have finally had the opportunity to visit the big city - London.

Coming in from the airport on the train, I was surrounded by endless green pastures and worn cottages, each roof showcasing beautiful Victorian chimneys that seem to line the London horizon no matter where you go.

And there I was…

In front of Buckingham Palace, quite small but oh my god, there is Buckingham Palace!

In the shadow of Big Ben, with the sun reflecting its gold detail it is far more beautiful than originally expected…

And there is no bigger novelty than winding in and out of London’s endless stream of streets in a classic black taxi… why the rest of the world does not have gorgeous little taxi’s like that I do not know.

In a way I almost feel patriotic to Britain - afterall, it is the protective big brother who has always looked out for its beloved lil sister nation. And I a way I almost felt like I was home again – and that was the nicest surprise of all.

awh Amy, food poisoning again?? That really sucks. Hope it wasn't severe. I was violently ill for 6 hours straight, and then a few more hours in the evenign when I had it but I think I had a couple of meals in my system affected by it... to this day I just tell people it was like having a exorcism performed on me! hah. You're probably off in some other country now since the videos are a week delayed but still, hope you feel well for the remainder of your adventures!
