The Mosquito is an ultra-sonic device used to disperse teenagers. It is being challenged by the Children's Commissioner who claims that the high-pitched sound causes discomfort and so infringes upon the human rights of young people. What do you think?
-
Mosquito? What Mosquito? I have never even heard of it!
-
It is shocking that they are infringing on our human rights, I feel disgusted with their actions!
-
I quite like the sound of the Mosquito, it makes me wanna Party, Party Party!
-
Adults should not pick on us for hanging around the streets, we have nowhere else to go.
-
Let's design our own product, but aim it at adults and give them a taste of their own medicine!

The National Minimum Wage (NMW) has increased to; £3.40 per hour for all workers under the age of 18, who are no longer of compulsory school age; £4.60 per hour for workers aged 18-21 inclusive and £5.52 per hour for workers aged 22 years and older. What do you think of it?
-
The new NMW is fair for everyone.
-
I think young people that work should get the same as older people that do the same job.
-
There shouldn't be a NMW, it should be up to the employers what they want to pay their employees
-
If young people get paid less, they might work longer to make up for it.
-
It doesn't matter, I know people who will get paid less because of they don't use a NI numbe

Is the new smoking age a good idea?
-
Yes, by making it 18, younger people will find it hard getting hold of Cigarettes
-
Don't think so, some people have always got cigarettes from older adults they know anyway
-
No, it is a waste of time and resources for the police to monitor it
-
It doesn't matter, the drinking age is 18 and lots of people under 18 drink all the time
-
No, more education is needed for young people to know the consequences of smoking from a young age

ALCOHOL VICTORY!
|
Young people have spoken…and the politicians have listened! Today, the Scottish Parliament rejected the Government’s plans to raise the purchase age of alcohol to 21.
MSPS voted by 72 to 47 to scrap the plan, which represent an enormous victory for the SYP and our partners at CARDAS.
We’ve been campaigning all summer long for an end to the plan and this is truly a historic day for the SYP. Click here http://www.scottishyouthparliament.o... for coverage of the morning’s debate and afternoon vote on the issue.
You can also catch up with what we’ve been doing to campaign on the issue. Click here http://www.scottishyouthparliament.o... for our official response to the Government’s consultation, or if you’d like to find out what we did at the Summit on the issue click here http://www.scottishyouthparliament.o.... US AMBASSADOR VISITS SYP
|
On Wednesday 13th August, the Scottish Youth Parliament was honoured with a visit by the United States Ambassador to the UK, Robert Tuttle. The Ambassador’s visit was noted by the MSYPs and other young people that attended for the senior diplomat’s charm and willingness to engage with Scotland’s young people.
It’s a rare privilege for SYP to be visited by someone so important and high profile. While Robert Holmes Tuttle isn’t necessarily a household name, the position of US Ambassador to the UK is seen as the highest position in the United States Foreign Service and is effectively the personal representative in Britain of President Bush and for the entire USA!

HAVE YOUR SAY ON SCOTLAND'S FUTURE!
|
Should we become independent? Should we protect the Union? Whatever you think, Scotland's constitutional future is a hot topic at the moment, with two different consultations on the go - one by the SNP government and one led by a coalition of other major parties. The SYP is keen to make sure that young people's voices are represented in the discussions, so to avoid being drawn into a potentially party-political debate we've created a survey which we will use to form the same submission to both consultations.
To find out more and to take part in the survey click this link http://www.scottishyouthparliament.o...
